Islamic historiography was shaped by the narratives of early Muslim chroniclers and transmitters from the first few centuries AH, and the works of later historians were influenced by this narrative heritage. Among these figures, Hisham al-Kalbi, as one of the most prominent early transmitters and genealogists, played a significant role in transmitting and consolidating historical data. One work that widely reflects Hisham al-Kalbi’s narratives is Baladhuri’s Ansab al-Ashraf. Using a descriptive-analytical method, this article examines the extent, areas, and manner of the influence of Hisham al-Kalbi’s narratives on the narrative structure and content of Ansab al-Ashraf.
The findings indicate that Baladhuri extensively drew upon Hisham al-Kalbi’s narratives in various subjects, including genealogical reports, tribal histories, early Islamic history, the biography and military campaigns of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), the history of the early caliphs, reports concerning the Shiʿa and the Imams, accounts of the Umayyad caliphs, as well as the history of Iraq and the city of Kufa. Furthermore, an examination of the characteristics of Hisham al-Kalbi’s historiography reveals that factors such as the breadth of his historical knowledge, the diversity of his sources, precision in transmitting reports, avoidance of sectarian biases, and attention to chronological order and genealogies contributed to Baladhuri’s reliance on his narratives. Overall, this study demonstrates that Hisham al-Kalbi’s influence on Ansab al-Ashraf was not limited to the mere transmission of reports but also significantly shaped Baladhuri’s historiographical approach and model. Investigating this influence not only clarifies the connection between early and later scholars in Islamic historiography but also contributes to a more precise understanding of the evolution of this discipline and Hisham al-Kalbi’s position within it.
