This study examines the mechanisms through which the rulers of Hormuz contributed to the transmission of Iranian culture during the eighth and ninth centuries AH. The main research question is how elements of Iranian culture were transmitted through Hormuz and which networks and institutions made this process possible. Adopting a historical approach and a descriptive-analytical method, the study is based on historical sources and travel accounts, particularly the reports of Ibn Battuta.
The findings of the study indicate that the transmission of Iranian culture within the sphere of Hormuz’s influence operated through three main mechanisms. First, commercial and maritime networks facilitated the movement of merchants, the Persian language, customs and traditions, technical knowledge, and other cultural elements. Second, Sufi networks, particularly the Kazeruniyya, Daniyaliyya, and Shamsiyya orders, played a role in transmitting Iranian teachings and traditions through khanqahs, Sufi masters, and transregional connections. Third, the presence of Iranian officials and functionaries within administrative, judicial, and religious structures contributed to the transmission and consolidation of Iranian linguistic, administrative, and institutional patterns.
The results show that the significance of the rulers of Hormuz in this process lay not merely in their direct cultural activities, but rather in their provision of a suitable political, economic, and social environment for the operation of these networks. From this perspective, Hormuz emerged during the eighth and ninth centuries AH as an important center connecting commercial, Sufi, and bureaucratic networks and, through these connections, contributed to the transmission of Iranian culture to surrounding regions and beyond the Persian Gulf.
