Rather than surveying the entire history of cultural and civilizational Iran, this study deliberately narrows its scope to a defined period — from the Ilkhanid era to the establishment of the Safavid state (roughly the 7th to early 10th century AH) — and to two specific, well-documented vehicles of Shia-Sunni convergence: Ibn al-'Arabi's doctrine of wahdat al-wujud and its reception within Twelver Shia thought, and the khanqah as a social institution. The single research question guiding the study is: how did these two vehicles, within this defined period, create a shared ground for epistemic and social convergence between Shia and Sunni communities in Iran?
Using a descriptive-analytical, library-based method grounded in primary Sufi texts (Fusus al-Hikam, Jami' al-Asrar wa Manba' al-Anwar, Kashf al-Mahjub, Tadhkirat al-Awliya, the Mathnawi) and secondary historical scholarship, the study first surveys the pre-Safavid background of Imam Ali's centrality in the initiatory chains of Sunni Sufi orders (Naqshbandi, Qadiri, Suhrawardi), then examines its two central vehicles in turn. Sayyid Haydar Amuli's eighth-century (AH) integration of wahdat al-wujud into Imami Shia thought, later consolidated by Mulla Sadra, operated at the epistemic-theoretical level; the khanqah operated at the institutional-social level, most notably in its gradual absorption into the official apparatus of Twelver Shiism under the early Safavids.
These two levels reinforced rather than duplicated one another — many of the same khanqahs that hosted inter-sectarian social exchange were also the sites where commentaries on the Fusus al-Hikam were taught — though the institutional level proved more vulnerable to political change than the more durable scholastic-textual level. The study concludes that a narrowly framed, well-evidenced account of these two vehicles offers a more rigorous basis for contemporary taqrib (rapprochement) discourse than broad, loosely substantiated claims about mystical convergence across the whole of Iranian cultural history.
